Stefan Martins joined PAC in 2021 as an Information Technology Security Officer. His current role is Cyber Security Architect, working for PAC’s Cyber Security (CS) capability. Part of Stefan’s role is security and system administration of the complex IT systems we manage and ensuring our clients enjoy the latest security standards, systems and protocols, and best practice security products.
Before PAC, Stefan served with the Defence Force as one of the first Australian Public Service Information Systems Security Managers required to secure the F-35A capability. “Essentially starting in a green field project to develop and implement policy, processes and procedures for day-to-day security and protection of the platform and its people”, he explains. He was also a Systems Engineer working across Education and managed IT Services for Local and State governments.
At PAC, one of the things he most enjoys is being challenged. Stefan says he’s constantly learning new technologies, methods, and ideas to create unique solutions and ways of doing things.
“Each day, I encounter something that pushes me or makes me grow
personally or professionally. I’ve never really enjoyed being mentally stationary.“
But working with cyber wasn’t Stefan’s first choice. He attended University with the intent of completing a degree in Computer Science, with a focus on Video Game Design. During this time, he had the opportunity to study Cyber Security and Forensics, “which I thoroughly enjoyed!”. Stefan switched to a Cyber security-focused degree and continued studying for a Master’s in Digital Forensics and in Cyber Security. “It’s been a non-stop studying adventure”.
Talking about studying, if he had to explain his job to kindergarteners, he would say that Cyber Security is about protecting people and things online. “Sometimes it’s about acting like police defending a bank from being robbed, but instead of ‘police’, it’s software or rules, and the ‘bank’ is their laptop or phone. Other times it’s a bit like acting as a doctor, trying to make sure that people’s things (like phones or laptops) are okay and they’re doing the right things online and not getting their devices sick” – well, that makes sense!
Stefan also likes to keep things interesting outside work hours, juggling between study and hobbies that are less technical “but still geeky and nerdy: video games, D&D, voice acting, gym and most importantly, annoying my partner”.
